Nuno César dos Santos Grosso is a Product Expert at Indra Space, specialising in Earth Observation, geospatial services and the transformation of satellite data into operational solutions for fisheries, environmental monitoring, maritime surveillance and disaster risk management. He holds a PhD in Environment focused on satellite-based air-quality monitoring and has contributed to research on natural hazards, flood risk, climate resilience and machine-learning applications using Copernicus Sentinel data. His work in fisheries has focused on developing Earth Observation services that combine satellite observations, vessel-identification information, environmental data and modelling outputs. As coordinator of the EU-funded NextOcean, he supported the development of solutions for characterising potential fishing areas, monitoring fishing activity and assisting authorities in identifying vessels potentially involved in illegal operations. This fisheries-related work is now continuing within EO4SURE and DEEPBLUEx2. EO4SURE is developing operational Earth Observation tools and cloud-based data pipelines to support sustainable-fisheries monitoring and national reporting against SDG indicators, including sustainable fish stocks and the economic contribution of fisheries. DEEPBLUEx2, led by Indra Space, develops EO-based solutions for route optimisation, safety at sea for small-scale fisheries, bycatch-risk reduction and parametric insurance for fisheries operators. Nuno has also contributed to projects addressing disaster risk management and environmental resilience. His experience includes the development of flood-susceptibility and social-vulnerability indicators, flood-risk mapping methodologies, and research combining Earth Observation with other information sources to improve earthquake detection and response. He has additionally supported cloud-based platforms that facilitate access to satellite data and processing resources for monitoring hazards, environmental change and vulnerable coastal areas.
